The morning dawned slow, cold, and eerie. Somewhere out there in the inky gloaming and the mist, jackals gathered together for warmth, unseen yet not unheard, calling out in the ebbing darkness with their spirited canine yips and hollers. As I happily took hold of a warm mug of coffee and bundled myself into the back of an open-backed Range Rover (known locally as a “Gypsy”), I wondered what the day would hold, whether the calls of the jackals portended success or failure for my first day on safari. I wouldn’t have to wait too long to find out.
