Just the name evokes a thousand thoughts, from words penned by Miguel de Cervantes and Ernest Hemingway to images painted on canvas by Francisco de Goya and Diego Velázquez (as well as Salvador Dali and Pablo Picasso), to Spaniards portrayed on today’s silver screen by Penélope Cruz and her husband, Javier Bardem. It’s a place that lives in vivid colour in the imagination – travellers to Spain land with a high degree of expectation, with those magnificent images firmly affixed in their minds. Happily, when it comes to expectations, Spain delivers.
